Mais ta signature me laisse perplexe .

Dear backers,

Have a look at what Mina, Unistellar’s director of manufacturing, brought back from a visit to our manufacturing partner this week. We hope that this photo prompts you to ask a question: doesn’t this industrial prototype look shockingly like our final product?

Well, the answer is yes because, technically, it is our final product, minus the mass-production-scale tools we’ll use when we start making eVscopes by the thousands. And that is our next big step: producing the tools and molds that will allow us to make many, many copies of this little guy, including the one we’ll be shipping to you in the near future!

This prototype is very close to final because it‘s fully machined and made up of the same parts that will go into our final product. We’re done making the 3D-printed parts that allowed us test the materials that go into the eVscope you will receive. That important work, now successfully completed, allowed us to ensure that all of our parts fit together smoothly and seamlessly before we moved on to making our molds.

If you take a closer look at the picture you can also see that the aluminum tube surface rendering is not absolutely seamless. We’re working on that now, and will have that work complete before we begin our official manufacturing process.

More on the tube: it has undergone a huge evolution. The one you see here is shorter and better balanced, so it will use less energy to point and track at deep-sky objects.

Another mechanical feature we’ve modified and are now testing is the primary mirror holder, which is crucial to providing good image quality and stability. This new holder will make collimation much easier and far more robust—and that will ensure that, when your eVscope travels, it will always be ready to provide stunning observations. Our optics expert Antonin wasn’t happy with how this device was working and has already figured out a solution with our manufacturer. A new prototyping of this part is already under way.

The tripod is almost finished too. The one you see here provides the eVscope with great stability and should be identical to the one you get next year.

This new prototype is also the first to get our own on/off button and USB port. Here’s one especially neat thing about the USB port: not only will it allow you to power your eVscope with an external battery, but it will also allow you to power your smartphone. A smartphone-controlled telescope with a powerless smartphone doesn’t make a lot of sense, and that’s why we found a way for you to charge your smartphone by simply plugging in into your eVscope.

On the electronics side, we’re now finished designing and integrating the cards and the onboard computer—another important milestone.

So, what’s next for this new prototype?

It’s going to be extensively tested and validated, with a strong focus on perfecting the mechanical modifications mentioned in this update. In fact we took advantage of a party at our HQ—we were celebrating Unistellar’s birthday!—to test this new prototype in the middle of Marseille and it worked great!

Our new prototype is also about to hit the road. First stop is as soon as this Friday in New York, then on to California!

Yes, you heard right, we are re-starting our demos. As you may have seen on our Facebook page and web site, we’ll demo this eVscope in New York at two iconic locations, thanks to our friends from New York Amateur Astronomy Association (AAA): on Friday, Dec. 7, near the American Museum of Natural History, where our Chief Scientific Officer, Franck, will give a talk on his research at the SETI Institute; and then on Saturday and Sunday on the north side of Union Square.

Obviously, a lot will depend on the weather. If it’s clear and you live nearby, please join us. We’ll provide additional information on our website and Facebook page in the coming days, as soon as an accurate weather forecast is available.

Having a product marks a key milestone for Unistellar. We are now becoming an industrial company and therefore felt it was time to say goodbye to crowdfunding. And so, at midnight on Dec. 5, we closed our Indiegogo campaign. Unistellar is now entering in a new phase of its life.

We’d like to thank each of you for supporting the eVscope and helping make this project possible. You, our first 2,000 backers, are also among the first to get an eVscope, after raising a record-breaking $3 million in a uniquely successful astronomy-focused crowdfunding campaign. Thanks to you, we are off to great things, and we’ll be talking about them regularly in future updates.

Clear skies,

The Unistellar team

:hm:
